NOVEMBER 10 - SHEWFELT INDUCTED TO CANADA'S SPORTS HALL OF FAME

Kyle Shewfelt was inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame today, the ceremony taking place in his hometown of Calgary, AB. The class of 2010 also includes speed skater and cyclist Clara Hughes, Paralympic wheelchair athlete Chantal Petitclerc, decorated hockey goaltender Patrick Roy, Formula 1 driver Jacques Villeneuve, and freestyle skier Jean-Luc Brassard. The Calgary Herald interviewed Shewfelt, shortly before the event. A favourite quotation from the interview:

...I came across a note I wrote to myself in 1995. A set of goals, I guess. But also a promise. On it I’d written: ‘I want to win and Olympic gold medal and I want to help put Canadian artistic gymnastics on the map.’

OCTOBER 23 - CAUTIOUS COACH: LIFE LESSONS WITH ELENA DAVYDOVA

The official 2010 World Championships web site details coach Elena Davydova's concern for her gymnast's readiness leading up to team qualifications. Kristina Vaculik fell during training, her arm swelling terribly. "It was bad, very nasty," Davydova told Words reporter Brigid McCarthy. "We took her to get an x-ray. It wasn’t broken, but it was badly damaged."

Cleared to compete the eve of team qualifications, Davydova nonetheless urged Vaculik to play it safe and withdraw. Davydova still remembers competing at the 1981 World Championships, with a broken neck. She fell during warm-ups, instinctively knew she'd broken her neck, but coaches refused to let the reigning Olympic Championships sit out. Now, Davydova plays it safe with her pupils:

I really try and think before my gymnasts do skills. Until it is ready, it does not go in a routine. I like Kristina to be prepared, and to feel good about herself before going into competition, rather than thinking ‘oh I am not sure if I am going to pull it off!’ I am always telling her, ‘as long as it is safe and you are enjoying yourself, do it.’ That is all I want for her.

Elena Davydova finished third all-around at the 1981 World Championships, her Soviet teammates finishing first (Olga Bicherova) and second (Maria Filatova). Davydova went on to compete in all four apparatus finals, her last competition.

Team Canada finished 13th in team qualifications. They will be aiming for top 12 at next year's World Championships in Tokyo, Japan. The top 8 teams earn automatic berths to the 2012 Olympic Games in London, with the rest battling for the four remaining team spots at the London Test Event, expected to be held January 2012.

SEPTEMBER 29  - MAY ENJOYING COMMONWEALTH GAMES

More good news stories are coming out of Delhi, site of the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Gabrielle May spoke by phone to Winnipeg Free Press, saying she's enjoying the experience.

"I was expecting it to be a lot worse than it is, but it's pretty good. I'm enjoying it so far. The rooms are pretty good There's a few things that could be fixed up, the plastering on the walls and such but overall, it's pretty nice. It's all air-conditioned, and there's lots of space."

Whereas worker are struggling to finish some venue, the Indira Ghandi venue gets the green light from gymnasts and officials. "The gymnastics venue is fantastic," May added. "It's all brand new equipment, everything is world-class."

Asked how Delhi ranks to other competition experiences, May added "This one is so much better. In the other competitions, it's just been gymnastics but this is my first Games experience and it's so great."

Security concerns have limited the athletes' free movement, but May says she's pleased with the host's efforts. "I would have liked to see something of India but they're encouraging us to stay in the village," May said. "But they're bringing a lot of cultural things into the village so we get a taste of what it's like."

Women's podium training is Saturday, October 2.

AUGUST - GARDINER & WATSON COMPETE AT INAUGURAL YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES

Maddie Gardiner and Robert Watson competed well at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. Gardiner enjoyed a stellar preliminary round, qualifying for the all around final and three of four apparatus finals. She finished 13th all-around in the final, after a rocky beam routine (2 falls) and fall on floor.

Gardiner finished 5th on the vault during the apparatus finals, and suffered a horrific fall on bars (falling on her Jaegar she hit her head on bars, biting down on her lip and requiring stitches). The fall necessitated that she withdraw from beam finals, to which she'd qualified in 5th place.

In the men's competition, Robert Watson hit six-for-six during the preliminary round, qualifying to the all-around final in 11th place. He fared less well in the all-around final, after getting off to rough start on his first apparatus (fall on pommels) and finished 17th AA.

The win is a confidence booster for Gafuik, ?It feels pretty good,? Gafuik told Gymnastics Australia. ?The Pacific Rim is a big competition on our calendar and I was really happy that I was in good shape to give it a good go and I did a good job tonight. It was pretty sketchy in the middle [falls on high bar and floor], but I got there in the end.?

APRIL 15 - DAMIANOVA SIGNS WITH UTAH

2008 Olympian Nansy Damianova is joining the Utes this September!

"I'm very happy and proud to join Utah's prestigious gymnastics program," Damianova told the University of Utah. "As a child, my goal was to compete at the Olympic Games. I put all my time, energy and focus on achieving that goal and I enjoyed every minute in Beijing in 2008. It was a wonderful experience and I'll cherish it forever. After living through this very high intensity journey, I needed a little time to adjust to a new life as a young woman and plan my future. I found that my love of gymnastics was so strong that I couldn't see myself without it. With the help of my coaches and parents, I decided to look into competing at the NCAA level and the University of Utah seems to me the best program to achieve my new goals."

Added Damianova, "I'm very happy to start a new life in Salt Lake City and look forward to joining the team. Training with the girls and competing in front of the best gymnastics crowd I've ever seen will be amazing! Just as I did for 10 years to reach the Olympics, I'm ready to put all my energy, efforts and time on helping the Utah team achieve its goals. I'm very proud to say that I'm a Ute!"
