Teams for the 2014 Commonwealth Games are expected to be announced Monday, June 9.
MAY 31 - THE GREAT EXODUS TO OHIO STATE
Ohio
State is getting ready to host a bevy of Canadian gymnastics! Joining them
this fall are Stephanie Merkle and Kaitlyn
Hofland, with Victoria-Kayen Woo and Casey Carvalho
bboth set to join within the following two years.
Hofland has originally signed with the University of Utah, planning to defer in a bid for the Rio 2016 team. "We are so excited to add Kaitlyn to the team for the 2014-15 season," Buckeyes coach Fagan said. "She brings great international elite experience to the team and her lines and form are impeccable. She has very high scoring potential on every event and will complete our incoming class of six talented freshman set to arrive this fall. After meeting Kaitlyn this winter, I knew right away that she would be a great for our team. She has a maturity and an understanding about herself as a gymnast that will allow her to compete at the highest level in NCAA gymnastics."
Fagan on Merkle: "Stefanie has impeccable form and is so fun to watch. As an elite gymnast, she will bring some of the most difficult and high level skills to the team next year and will be a strong addition to each of our lineups."
MAY 14 - SILVIA COLUSSI-PELAEZ TRANSFERS TO OREGON; SISTER MARIANA SET TO JOIN IN 2015

Silvia Colussi-Pelaez has transferred to the Oregon State University. Silvia spent her Freshman year of NCAA competition at the University of Florida, which tied with Oklahoma for top honors at the 2014 NCAA Championships. A gymnastics powerhouse, Silvia struggled to make Florida's line-up. Oregon State is a logical choice for Silvia, whose younger sister Mariana recently declared her intent to compete for the Beavers starting Fall 2015. In the meantime, Mariana will compete for Spain. Also at Oregon State is Maddie Gardiner. |

MAY 9 - MARIANA COLUSSI-PELAEZ SWITCHES NATIONALITY

granted the switch at their most recent meeting, in Kuwaitt. The
move follows that of older sister Silvia, who has competed for
Spain for several years and is now competing NCAA at the

MAY 3 - VICTORIA-KAYEN WOO TO OHIO
Victoria-Kayen Woo (Gym-Richelieu) has committed to Ohio State for 2016-2017. A member of the Canadian National Team for senior women, she placed 5th AA at the 2014 Elite Canada, and was third AA at last year's National Championships. Younger sister Rose-Kaying Woo also competes for Canada.

APRIL 27 - ONYSHKO PICKS UP SILVER IN OSIJEK
Isabela
Onyshko picked up a medal today, at the final day of competition at the
Osijek World Cup, in the Czech Republic. The result came on floor
exercise, where she also won a bronze at last month's Doha World Cup.
She also finished 5th on beam today and 6th on bars yesterday.

APRIL 24 - JP CARON STEPPING DOWN AS PRESIDENT/CEO OF GCG
Gymnastics Canada Gymnastique today announced that Jean-Paul Caron will conclude his mandate as President/CEO of the Federation, effective April 28th 2014. Caron will assume a consultant role with the Federation, assisting with the delivery of the Gymnastics Canada domestic and international hosting plan, including the development of the bid application for the hosting of the FIG 2017 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Montreal.

APRIL 12 - DOUBLY GOLDEN ON VAULT

Canada's dominated vault today, fielding wins in both women's and men's events. Ellie Black and Hugh Smith claimed the golds for Canada!
Also golden was Scott Morgan, who put in the highest score on the floor exercise, an event which he qualified to the final at the last World Championships. Morgan also added a bronze on rings.
Other medals for Canada, in this final day of competition, included Maegan Chant (bronze on vault) and Aleeza Yu (bronze on floor).

APRIL 11 - OEHRLEIN TAKES FIRST GOLD FOR CANADA

Ryan Oehrlein was golden today, on rings, in his final day of competition at the PAcific Rim Championships. It was Canada's first gold of the competition for artistic gymnastics.
In the junior women's competition, rong>Shallon Olsen won two medals, a bronze on beam and a silver on floor.
Rose Kaying Woo also picked up a medal on floor, bronze.

APRIL 11 - OLSEN AND WOO MEDAL IN THEIR FINAL DAY AT PACIFIC RIM

Ryan Oehrlein was golden today, on rings, in his final day of competition at the PAcific Rim Championships. It was Canada's first gold of the competition, for artistic gymnastics.
In the junior women's competition, Shallon Olsen won two medals, a bronze on beam and a silver on floor.
Rose Kaying Woo also picked up a medal on floor, bronze.

APRIL 10 - RHYTHMIC: CANADA'S BEZZOUBENKO LEADS AFTER TWO APPARATUS

Photos are up from the first day of rhythmic competition, where individual seniors and juniors competed in the ball and hoop apparatus. Canada's Patricia Bezzoubenko currently leads the field, posting the top scores on both apparatus.

APRIL10 - CANADIAN MEN CLAIM BRONZE AT PACIFIC RIM

Not to be outdone by their female counterparts, the US men also took home gold tonight in the team competition tonight. Japan remained in silver position throughout the meet, with Canada edging out China in the sixth and final rotation to grab bronze (too many falls for China, and excellent vaulting from Canada).
"Our goal for the team was to finish in the top six, so this was a big surprise to finish third," said junior Ryan Oehrlein told Gymnastics Canada.
John Orozco (USA) won the senior men's AA, his first major international win in some time. Orozco struggled at the 2012 Olympics, and regaining his competitive edge has been difficult. No more!
Winning the all-around is always a great accomplishment," Orozco told USAG. "There are a lot of good guys here from the other countries. I was not extremely happy with some of my performances, but we did well as a team. I didn't know some of the juniors before this meet, but they did a great job, and we pulled together as a team."
Japan's Toshiya Ikejiri and Yuto Murakami finished second and third, respectively. Canada's top all-arounder was Hugh Smith, who finished 9th.
Japan's Kakeru Tanigawa easily topped the field in the junior division, both in his gymnastics and personality. He finished over two points ahead of Americans Marty Strech and Alex Yoder, who tied for silver. Kakeru was all smiles throughout the meet, greeting everyone he passed. Rene Cournoyer was Canada's top placing junior, finishing 6th.

As much as possible, organizers will try to alternate between male and female routines, so audiences can watch all routines individually. APRIL 9 - CANADA CLAIMS SILVER AT PACIFIC RIM

The USA handily won today's team competition, and top all-around spots. The real competition was between Canada and China for silver. Canada opened on bars, to take the lead over China after rotation 1. China regained ground on vault and bars, heading into the fourth rotation in silver medal position. Thanks to strong vaults from Ellie Black and Aleeza Yu, who sports a new DTY, Canada easily edged China for silver.
USA went 1-2 in both senior and junior all-around standings. Elizabeth Price took top honours with Kyla Ross finishing second. Ellie Black rounded out the podium in third position, her strongest events of the day being vault and beam. She earned the highest beam score of the night, and will advance to finals on that plus the other three apparatus.
Aleeza Yu finished 5th AA and advances to two apparatus finals (beam and floor). Canada's third senior, Maegan Chant qualified to vault final.
"We came in to represent Canada as a team and the girls were great," Black told the organizers. “Competing in such a huge meet, I think was such a great experience for everyone, and coming third in the all-around was amazing for me."
Bailey Key of the USA took gold in the junior women's AA, with teammate Nia Dennis finishing second. Their third gymnast, Norah Flatley, finished with the third highest score but due to 2-per-country was forced off the podium. Bronze was awarded to China's Luo Huan. Top for Canada was Rose-Kaying Woo, who placed 6th. Shallon Olsen finished 7th, and Megan Roberts in 11th.

Victoria Moors finished 4th all-around at today's World Cup, the last of the current series.
APRIL 2 - SHEWFELT TO BE INDUCTED INTO OLYMPIC HALL OF FAME
Three time Olympian - and Olympic gold medalist on floor in Athens, Greece in 2004 - Kyle Shewfelt will be inducted into Canada's Olympic Hall of Fame this year. Other athletes also being inducted are speed skater Cindy Klassen and the 2008 Canadian men's rowing team. On that rowing team was Malcolm Howard, husband to former rhythmic gymnast Erika-Leigh Stirton (now Erika Howard)!

MARCH 31 - EDMONTON HOPING TO HOST 2022 COMMONWEALTH GAMES
The City of Edmonton is looking to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Completed bids are due to the Federation by March 2015 with the Games being awarded in September 2015. Also in contention for these Games is Durban, South Africa.
"Hosting the games in 2022 will demonstrate to the world how much Edmonton has evolved and reflect the Commonwealth Games Federation's confidence in our city," Mayor Don Iveson told CBC News.
The Commonwealth Games take place every four years, in between the Summer Olympics. This year, Glasgow plays host to the Games. In 2018, Australia's Gold Coast plays host.
The Commonwealth Games are not new to Edmonton: They hosted the 1978 competition, in which Canada's gymnasts dominated. Today, more than than 70 countries with 4,000 athletes participate in the games.

MARCH 30 - WOO AND COURNOYER WIN GOLD AT JUNIOR PAN AMS

In the men's competition, Rene Cournoyer topped the field on floor. Justin Karstadt finished 6th on floor, and the same on rings, but medalled on pommel horse (silver). Sam Zakutney finished 6th on both pommel horse and rings.

MARCH 29 - CANADA WINS JUNIOR PAN AMS

Canada's junior men’s team won bronze, behind the USA and Brazil. They were represented by Sam Zakutney, Justin Karstadt, Anthony Tawfik, and Rene Cournoyer. Top finisher was Justin Karstadt, in fouth place. Cournoyer earned the Youth Olympic Games berth for Canada on the men's side.
Woo advances to all four appartus finals, with Roberts competing bars, Townsend on beam and Olsen on vault and floor.
You can bet that every one of these athletes hopes to return to Brazil for Rio 2016!

MARCH 28 - ONYSHKO WINS BRONZE AT FIRST WORLD CUP
Isabela Onyshko won bronze on floor, in her World Cup appearance, in Doha, Qatar. A pair of Romanian Olympians, Larisa Iordache and Diane Bulimar, took gold and silver, respectively.
Doha is the frontrunner to host the 2018 World Championships.

MARCH 22 - SMITH WINS U OF C INTL CUP
Reigning National Champ Hugh Smith won this year's University of Calgary International Cup.
Evan Cruz placed second, with Bobby Kriangkum
(trains in Canada but represents Thailand) placing third.
Smith picked up a second gold in the apparatus finals, on vault. Scott Morgan won floor and rings, Kevin Lytwyn won parallel bars and high bar, Anderson Loran won pommel horse.

USA Gymnastics announced the roster for the 2014 American Cup today, and Victoria Moors is among the 8 women competing. This will be the third appearance at an American Cup for Moors, who placed third all-around at last year's event.
The competition takes place March 1, 2014 and will be televised LIVE on Universal Sports and NBC. |
